8-piece electric afrobeat band led by Baba Adesose - master drummer, artist and elder statesman of African music both in Africa and the Diaspora since the 70’s.

Adesose Wallace is a stalwart of African music. A master percussionist, artist, teacher, philanthropist and social commentator. He has shared the stage with some of Africa’s luminary musicians and bands - Hugh Masekela, Fela Kuti, Geraldo Pino, Sunny Ade, Miriam Makeba amongst many others. After coming to London in the early 80s, Ade formed IBILE, which... means 'Children of the World. He has graced the stage at Glastonbury and WOMAD leaving in audiences in awe.

His avid enthusiasm for the use of traditional African instruments gave birth to a distinctive sound - brewing an intricate blend of blues, jazz, afro funk and psychedelia - 100% unplugged; the sound churned out by this incredibly dynamic band utilises mostly traditional African instruments. Listening to IBILE is like embarking on psychedelic musical odyssey.

“Raw Calypso rock and tropical funk from Gil Scott Heron’s spiritual son!”

Inspired by some lines by the surrealist poet Ted Joans, “Rubber Orchestras” is Anthony Joseph’s third album with his mighty electrifying The Spasm Band!

A mesmerising mix of deep funk, Jazz, Rock, Afrobeat and soca with Joseph’s distinctive vocal delivery, skillfully produced by drummer and leader of The Heliocentrics Malcolm Catto, and including one very special track arranged and produced by 2 Tone legend Jerry Dammers (The Specials/Spatial AKA Orchestra).

The opening words on the new album “The griot is the sound of universal culture” are key to understanding the universe of Anthony Joseph, born in Trinidad but London-based for many years. Having carved out a highly successful career writing and teaching poetry, as well as recording and performing with his band The Spasm Band, one would be hard pressed to think of any other present day performer doing something akin to what Joseph is doing on Rubber Orchestras. Anyone who still treasures a copy of Axis Bold as Love by Jimi Hendrix will recognize some aspects of the vocal delivery, mix that with a bit of Benjamin Zephaniah, Fela Kuti, Sly Stone and Gil Scott-Heron.

The new album Rubber Orchestras (Heavenly Sweetness/Naïve) is released in October followed by a new poetry collection of the same title in November by Salt Publishing.

In Africa we have a tradition of celebrating life over death so for this reason the opportunity should not be missed to celebrate LIVE, the music works of a truly Great African Musician... FELA ANIKULAPO-KUTI, on his birthday Saturday the 15th of October 2011.

This night will feature Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Orchestra performing carefully re-orchestrated Fela favourites/classics. The selection from Fela's repertoire will mark the changes and development in Fela's music through the decades from Koola lobitos (Hi-life, jazz) African 70 (Afro Funk) and Egypt 80 (Afro big band sound, with longer, more intricate pieces). There will be special guest musicians on the night to pay their respects with DJ Koichi Sakai (Afrobeat Vibration) DJing on the night, playing memorable Afrobeat Anthems. Soul Of The Movement

Soul of the Movement celebrates musicians who have revolutionised the sound of black music. The night commences with a film free screening, followed by DJs and live musicians paying homage to reggae producers and artists that pioneered the sound. In the main room will be a bespoke ensemble of local musicians performing bass heavy sounds featuring the sublime vocals of Prince Jamo and on stage engineering wizardry from Relative Dub's King Beyond. The basement features music that became the soundtrack to the freedom movement, expect to hear tunes that span the late 50s , civil rights movement to the more current funk of the 70s, through the hip hop of Harlem's block party days. This is a one off party not to be missed!
